Wandle Fortnight is an annual celebration of the Wandle Valley, that takes place over three weekends every September. At this time of year, the river Wandle comes alive with around 40 events and activities including guided walks, bike rides, exhibitions, and much more.
Wandle Fortnight is organised by Wandle Valley Forum, to bring the local community together, and appreciate the beauty of our cherished waterway.

Invasive Non Native Species Training

In this training session you will learn about the Invasive Non Native Species (INNS) in the river Wandle. You will be taught how to identify Himalayan Balsam, floating pennywort, signal crayfish, mitten crab, parrots feather and giant hogweed, and how to record and submit findings. You can then go out and survey the Wandle in your own time during Wandle Fortnight. You can book a place through South East Rivers Trust.

Mitcham Heritage Day is an annual celebration of local heritage. The programme includes guided and self guided walks, activities, and special exhibitions.

Carshalton Water Tower is open for tours. You will get the chance to visit the 18th century water tower and garden, and see the Hermitage and Sham Bridge.
The Big Wandle Walk and Talk

You can join the walk at any of three locations:
1. Plough Lane – by the Womble Bench, outside the AFC Wimbledon
2. Colliers Wood – outside the tube station
3. Morden Hall Park – the picnic area near the Snuff Mill and Stable Yard
The walk is organised by the Walk and Talk Movement. All three walks will meet at Merton Abbey Mills for a community get together.
‘Barney’s Wandle Ramble’ – Guided Walk and Plaque Unveiling

This is a guided history walk in Earlsfield, focusing on the World War II era. You will find out about the effects of the war on the community in Earlsfield, as well as the life of an ARP Warden in Garrett Park who ran a barbers shop, which has been in business for over 100 years.
Social History Exhibition

The exhibition at Mitcham Cricket Club will commemorate 150 years since since professional cricketer, James Southerton travelled from Mitcham to Australia and New Zealand, to take part in the cricket tour led by the English cricket player, William Gilbert Grace.

This is an interesting talk about the river Wandle and the development of the nature reserve at Beddington Farmlands. The event is run by RSPB Croydon and Tony Burton, Chair of the Wandle Valley Forum, and is open to all ages. There is no need to book, and tickets cost £5.

Leisurely Cycle Ride
Starting at and returning to the Pavilion Cafe, Beddington Park.

This is a leisurely cycle ride organised by CTC Beginners. The cycle ride will go through open spaces, along quiet roads and byways, and stop at a nearby café before returning. This is a free event, and there is no need to book. Children are welcome.

Abundance Wimbledon Fruit Day

Abundance Wimbledon’s annual Fruit Day is a fair selling jams, cakes, jellies, marmalades, and chutneys. All the products are made using surplus fruit picked locally. There will also be live music, family activities and prize draws.

Pond Work

Help to remove excess vegetation from around the carp pond and also from yew tree arches in The Canons. The group will then move onto Mitcham Cricket Ground to help prune the privet hedge along the boundary. No need to book, and tools will be provided. Children are welcome. The event is organised by Friends of the Canons.

Goat Bridge River Restoration Community drop-in

At this drop-in event you can hear about a plans to rejuvenate a stretch of the river Wandle at Goat Bridge. This includes lowering a weir, and putting in a series of structures such as rock ramps and bed check weirs. At the event there will be experts from Thames Water, the Environment Agency and South East Rivers Trust.

‘Lost Nursery of Blooming Tooting’ – Guided Walk and Plaque Unveiling

This is a guided history walk to celebrate the ‘Tooting Nursery’, which, during the 1860s and 1870s, was once a notable garden in Tooting. It was situated near Moffat and Hereward Roads and was owned and managed by the Rollisson family throughout its existence. You can book a free ticket through Eventbrite.
Hackbridge Fete

Hackbridge Fete is a fun community event with many local stall holders, a free bouncy castle for children, a kids circus, face painting, hot food and cakes. There’s also the chance to join community groups, and meet your local police officers.
Walk the Wandle Trail

This is a guided walk of the Wandle Trail, led by Peter from Sutton & Wandle Valley Ramblers. There are three different starting points, if you don’t want to walk the whole of the trail. The starting places are as follows:

Hoot in the Park

At this event Berkshire Birds of Prey are bringing 5-7 birds to Poulter Park. You’ll be able to hold and meet the birds, including a little owl, sparrowhawk, kestrel, barn owl and tawny. There will also be free owl based arts and crafts, as well as a refreshments stall with owl themed cakes and sweets, as well as cold and hot drinks. No booking is required.
