Map of Bellevue Road in Wandsworth
History of Bellevue Road in Wandsworth
Bellevue Road was built in 1827, and followed the route of an old footpath across the common. The earliest buildings on Bellevue Road and St James’ Drive were constructed in 1864-1865. These were:
- Hope Tavern (constructed opposite where the railway station would be built)
- White Lodge (23 Bellevue Road)
- Clifton Villa (now 111 St James’ Drive)
Between 1866-1871 further development continued around these three properties, and Bellevue Road became filled with small two storey houses and shops.
Most of the buildings on Bellevue Road were commercial properties including a stable, butcher, draper, stationer, grocer, boot maker and a large dairy. This was unlike St James’ Drive, which was mostly made up of residential properties, with only one shop and a bank.
In the mid 1860s another pub, called the Surrey Tavern, was built on Bellevue Road, at the opposite end to the Hope Tavern. Brinkley’s Kitchen is now on the site of the original pub, which closed down around 2005.
Most of the early residents of Bellevue Road were tradespeople, and shopkeepers. A fewer higher paid professionals moved into the larger houses on St James’ Drive.
Below is a map of Bellevue Road that was published in 1897. You can see the Hope Tavern and the Surrey Tavern located at either end of the road.
